Small Hive Beetle Larvae

Small hive beetle larvae (SHB) can cause significant damage to bee colonies, and should not be left unchecked. These beetles can quickly take over a colony, and will do more harm than good.

The SHB is a pest that likes to live and raise their young in dark and damp areas, so avoid putting your hives under canopy of trees or brush or covering them with gravel, mulch or paving. Instead, hives should be in a sunny area that gets direct sunlight most of the time.

Females lay masses of eggs in cracks and crevices inside bee hives, or directly on pollen and brood combs. Eggs are about two-thirds the size of honey bee eggs and look similar in appearance.

After hatching, beetle larvae feed on honey, pollen and bee brood or eggs. After 7-10 days, mature “wandering” beetle larvae exit the hive and burrow into the soil to pupate.

Adults of the SHB are about 1/4″ long and reddish brown in color, but can become darkly colored when their exoskeleton hardens. They can be spotted running across the underside of an outer cover, on either side of the inner cover, and on top bars of frames.

A female can lay as many as 1,000 eggs in her lifetime. These are usually laid in clutches, but she can also puncture cell cappings and oviposit directly on brood cells.

Once the eggs hatch, they immediately begin to search for food. Beetle larvae feed on honey, pollen, and bee brood or eggs. They hatch in 2-4 days, and complete their larval development within 7-10 days.

After pupation, mature beetle larvae emerge from the soil, seek out a hive and locate it by odors. Once they find a host bee colony, they enter it and seek out a place to lay their eggs.
